How to get a phone in Singapore
Now that I will be here for a longer time I decided to get a phone contract. So far I have been using this top up cards.
When I asked the person from the hotline about it they tell me that as a foreigner on a student visa or temporary employment visa you have to pay a S$200 deposit! So far I believed that this would only apply if you get a new phone with the contract.
The second option would be understandable (as you might just run off with the phone), but to more or less "pay" S$200 just to be able to spend even more money on your phone?! This kind of upsets me.
Of course, there might be a higher risk that I don't pay my bills and disappear when I am a foreign student, but when you consider that the monthly fee is around S$20, how great can the damage be?
I mean there is always a risk that your customers don't pay the bill, even when you are a Singaporene. Why not ask for some other form of guaranty, like a third person or a proof that you earn sufficiently well?

Jetzt wo ich ich für eine längere Zeit hier sein werde, habe ich mich entschlossen, einen Handyvertrag zu holen. Ich habe bisher diese Prepaid Karten genutzt.
Als ich mit der Hotline gesprochen habe, sagen sie mir, dass man als Ausländer mit einem Studentenvisum oder vorübergehenden Beschäftigungs Visum eine Kaution von S$200 hinterlegen muss! Bisher habe ich gedacht, dass dies nur gilt, wenn man ein neues Handy mit dem Vertrag haben moechte.
Die zweite Option wäre verständlich (weil man mit dem Handy einfach abhauen koennte), aber $200 "zahlen" nur in der Lage zu sein noch mehr Geld mit dem Handy ausgeben zu koennen! Das veraergert mich etwas.
Natürlich ist es ein höheres Risiko, dass ich meine Rechnungen nicht bezahle und verschwinde, wenn ich ein ausländischer Student bin, aber wenn man bedenkt, dass die monatliche Gebühr etwa $20 betragen, wie groß kann der Schaden sein?
Ich meine es gibt immer ein Risiko, dass die Kunden nicht bezahlen, auch wenn Sie ein Singapurer sind. Warum verlangen sie nicht einfach eine andere Form der Garantie, wie eine dritte Person oder ein Beweis dafür, dass man genuegend verdient?

:) sadly the policy has changed. i dunno hwy but perhaps due to the influx of foreign ppl here and the ease of it to get a phone plan which is relatively cheap.
ah well so much for singapore's open door policy to global migrants.
actually its only open door for "the upper first tier of professionals"
and mayb scholars and ppl who would eventually pay the government back.
