So Long and Thanks for the Diploma
I haven't written here in a long time, but now there is actually something that is worth posting: I have graduated from university!! I submitted my diploma thesis and now I can officially call myself a "Diplom-Informatiker", short form "Dipl.-Inf.".
The thesis title is "Investigations into the Use of Preposition Sense in Semantic Argument Classification". The question that I tried to answer was whether the meaning of prepositions can be used to correctly classify semantic roles in English sentences. For example the semantics of "in the kitchen" and "in the morning" are quite different and the preposition "in" has two different meanings. One problem in natural language processing (NLP) is to find the correct meaning of words. In my case the correct meaning of prepositions. Another problem is to find and classify semantic roles, that is finding the constituents that tell us Who is doing What to Whom and Where and When?
Let's consider the following example:
Daniel ate a sandwich in the kitchen.
The correct meaning or sense of "in" would be "being or appearing enclosed in something else". The semantics of the constituent "in the kitchen" would be a locative adjunctive (ARGM-LOC). The semantics of the preposition is related to the semantics of the dominating phrase. In my thesis, I investigated whether disambiguating the preposition can help to find the correct semantics of the dominating phrase.
Anyway, I submitted my thesis, held my defense and after 6 years ex matriculated myself from the University of Karlsruhe (TH).

DA - week three
Diploma thesis week three has passed, without any major breakthrough, but at least some progress.
I can run my fellow PhD student's system and reproduce his results. At least something is actually "working".
Now I have to get "hands on" and try to get some experiments running myself. It is still the first month, but time flies and diploma thesis deadlines are hard deadlines.

Dimplomarbeit Woche drei ist vorbei und immer noch kein grossartiger Durchbruch, aber immerhin ein wenig Fortschritt.
Ich kann das System meines Doktoranten Kollegen ausfuehren und seine Ergebnisse reproduzieren. Wenigstens etwas "funktioniert" ueberhaupt erstmal.
Jetzt muss ich an den praktischen Teil und selbst ein paar Experimente starten. Es ist immer noch der erste Monat, aber die Zeit fliegt und Diplomarbeitsfristen sind harte Fristen.

One week of DA
The first week of my "Diplomarbeit" is already over, but I am still starting. It is such a pain, but every time you start a new project it takes an awfully large overhead to get things started.
Of course there are the administrative issues, e.g. getting your access card, visa, sign whatever documents your employer has for your, etc.
Then there is the next step: setting up your computer. This is should be easy for a computer scientist, but the devil is in the details, it sure is.
I collected my PC from the SoC Helpdesk on the first day (good), they even gave a me a trolley to carry it to my lab which is in the next building (good until I was faced by a staircase cause I took the wrong way). Then of course the monitor was just dead, so I had to exchange it for a new one. That one worked.
Then I have to login to my Unix account and install the system I will be working on. Unfortunately it needs lots of computing power so I need another account on a computer cluster(which I got); and it is very large so I have to apply for more disk space (which I am still waiting for).
And then of course there are the usual dependency problems when you need to install Unix/Linux applications (make errors, library dependencies, shell scripts,etc). This all takes up so much time that after one week I am still installing. Hopefully get I get my disk space tomorrow and get a first successful system run. That would be a first success.
And then there is of course reading. Tons and tons of reading and more reading..... That will probably continue even after the system is finally running.

Die ersten Wochen meiner "Diplomarbeit" ist schon vorbei, aber ich bin immer noch am Anfang. Es ist so ein nervig, aber jedes Mal, wenn man ein neues Projekt anfaengt braucht es ein schrecklich großen Overhead, um die Dinge ans Laufen zu kriegen.
Natürlich gibt es die administrativen Fragen, wie zB Zugangskarte bekommen, Visa, Dokumente unterschreiben, was auch immer der Arbeitgeber unterschrieben habe moechte, etc.
Dann kommt der nächste Schritt: Den Computer installieren. Dies sollte einfach sein für einen Informatiker, aber der Teufel steckt im Detail, das ist sicher.
Ich habe meinen PC vom SoC-Helpdesk am ersten Tag abgeholt(gut), sie haben mir sogar einen Trolly gegeben, um ihn zu meinem Labor, das sich in den nächsten Gebäude befindet zu bringen (gut, bis ich vor einer Treppe stand, weil ich den falschen Weg genommen habe). Dann war natürlich der Monitor tot, also musste ich ihn gegen einen neuen tauschen. Der hat dann funktioniert.
Dann habe ich nach dem Anmelden mein Unix-System installiert, mit dem ich arbeiten werde. Leider braucht das System viel Rechenleistung, daher brauche ich ein anderes Konto auf einem Computer-Cluster (den ich habe), und es ist sehr groß, so dass ich mehr Speicherplatz auf der Festplatte brauche (auf den ich noch warten).
Und dann gibt es natürlich die üblichen Probleme, die Abhängigkeit, wenn man Unix / Linux-Anwendungen installieren muss,(Make fehler, Bibliotheks-Abhängigkeiten, Shell-Skripte, etc). Das alles nimmt so viel Zeit in Anspruch, dass ich nach einer Woche immer noch am installieren bin. Hoffentlich bekommen ich meinen Speicherplatz morgen und bekommen einen ersten erfolgreichen Systemlauf. Das wäre ein erster Erfolg.
Und dann gibt es natürlich das lesen. Tonnenweise lesen und mehr lesen..... Das wird wohl auch noch weitergehen, nachdem das System endlich läuft....
